HAMWORTHY UNITED 2 RINGWOOD TOWN 0

Sydenhams Wessex Cup 2nd Round (Wednesday 05-11-08)

After establishing an early lead the Hammers won this game quite comfortably. The visitors never really troubled Martin Peters throughout the game. The nearest they came to scoring were two powerful shots from distance that he watched go harmlessly over the bar.
Hamworthy took the lead just 40seconds after the kick off when Mark Claremont found the back of the net .At this point the Ringwood defence were still trying to sort themselves out, and in some disarray. The pattern of the match was soon set with United having much more of the possession. The Town were closing them down as quickly as possible to prevent many clear cut chances on goal. It looked as though Tom Jeffes would double the lead when he beat the keeper, but a last ditch goal line clearance by a defender saved the day for Ringwood. The Town made the occasional break up field, but most attacks were easily dealt with by Nathan Walker, and his defence. Ringwood must have felt pleased to have gone in only one down at the break, and still in with a good chance of getting something from the game.
United continued to have most of the play after the interval and increased their domination as the game progressed. Nathan Walker rattled the crossbar from twenty five yards out, and a Ringwood defender almost deflected a low cross into his own net. Veteran Jason Lovell was outstanding for the Town, playing as a central defender, and winning most things in the air. The Hammers added a second goal after 72 minutes direct from a Richard Jackson corner. The ball evaded everybody including the Ringwood keeper, and curled in at the far corner. The same player almost added a third goal when after a jinxing run into the box, his shot hit the foot of the post. United did get the ball again into the back of the net when Stuart Cannie burst into the box. He beat several defenders before hitting a goal bound shot which was going in. Before the ball crossed the line however Ryan Dovell appeared at the far post to make sure, and helped it over. Unfortunately for Stuart Cannie and the Hammers, he did so from an offside position, and was ruled offside quite rightly by the Referees Assistance. Hamworthy went close several more times, but could not add to their total. They did however run out very comfortable winners in the end, and now play Alresford Town away in the next round on Tuesday 25-11-08.
