HAMWORTHY UNITED RESERVES 0 WINCANTON TOWN 1
Dorset Premier League Supplementary Cup Final
Hamworhy lost their last chance of any silverware this season when they went out to a twelfth minute own goal. The Hammers having already lost to the Wiltshire team twice this season 4-1 away, and 3-1 at home were the underdogs for this Final tie. Joint Managers Richard Flowers and Gary Clark decided to play the team that had supported them all season, and not strengthen up with First Team squad players which they could have done.
The match was played with a very strong wind blowing down the pitch making playing conditions not easy. The ball was up in the air a lot of the time favoring the taller Town players, and putting pressure on the Reserves defence especially at set pieces. Wincanton also had very quick front men that broke out quickly stretching the Hammers. Wincanton took the lead when United failed to clear their lines and in the melee that followed Sean Griffiths put past his own keeper Luke Wines who had dived the other way. Player Manager Gary Clark should have equalized shortly afterwards when he found himself two yards out and with the goal at his mercy, but somehow managed to head the ball wide. Wincanton continue d to have most of the play, but fortunately for the Hammers their finishing did not live up to their approach work. United were pleased to go in at the break only one down.
Half Time 1-0
The second half continued much the same as in the first half with the Hammers having to do most of the defending. Jim Crossin did manage to get in a couple of decent goals scoring positions, but was unable to get in a telling shot. The introduction of Lewis Williams and Luke Reynolds gave United a bit more pace and for the first time they began to get at the Town defenders. In the last two minutes Luke Wines came out of goal to take a free kick inside the Wincanton half. The ball in was not a good one and Wincanton broke quickly facing an open goal. To the keepers credit he managed to get back in time to make a last ditch save and keep the score 1-0 at the final whistle.
