HAMWORTHY UNITED 1 ALREFORD TOWN 1
Monday, March 29th, 2010Sydenhams Wessex Premier League (Saturday 27-03-10)
Hamworthy were once again unable to put out the same team that played in the previous game, and chages once again had to be made. Luke Burbidge and Joe Toghill were not up for selection for various reasons, but Simon Browne was able to welcome back Stuart Cannie into the side after his illness. Hamworthy were out to avenge a 3-0 defeat inflicted on them at Alresford ten days earlier. They must have been pleased then to see that Matt Dawson the scorer of all three goals that night was not on the team sheet.
The game got off to a slow start with neither team able to create much in attack, and both midfields cancelling one another out. It was Alresford who opened the scoring after seventeen minutes when nothing really looked on. An innocent looking throw in from the right was only partially cleared by the Hamworthy defence to just outside the penalty box. There it was met by an approaching Alresford player who took full advantage of the mistake, and lashed the ball past the helpless Max Frampton to make it 1-0 to the Visitors. The Hammers should have been back on level terms minutes later when the Alresford keeper could only push a save out to the unmarked Stuart Cannie standing two yards out. The Hamworthy man somehow managed to put the ball over the bar when it looked easier to score. United attempts on goal were very few, and far between before the interval, as the Town continued to have the upper hand in possession. They too however were not really able to turn that possession into clear cut goal chances, and the interval came with no further addition to the scoring.
HT 0-1
Hamworthy started the second half with a deceptively strong gusty wind at their backs, and almost immediately looked a much improved side to the one that played in the first half. For the first time in the game they began to get their passing game going with Max Crow, and Jamie Barron getting forward a lot more into attacking positions. Alresford had a big let off when the ball somehow ran the full length of the goal, along the goal line, without any of the numerous outstretch legs being able to get a boot onto it. Soon after a powerful Hamworthy header just missed the post as United went in search of the equaliser. They were finally rewarded in the sixty-seventh minute when once again the Alresford Keeper did well to save, but could only knock the ball back to Jamie Barron. This time the United mid-fieder kept his head, and slipped the ball past the Keeper into the net to restore parity. There now looked to be only one winner of the game, as the Home side went in search of the winner. They still however had to be wary that Alresford did not hit them on the break, and catch them exposed at the back. With time running out Hamworthy were denied what looked to be a stone wall penalty, as an Alresford player appeared to control the ball with his hand as he brought it out of defence. The Referee looked at his Assistant, but allowed play to continue when there was no response from him, much to the relief of the Alreford players and spectators watching.
Simon Browne will probably look at this game as two points dropped, but this was the sort of game that the Hammers would have lost before his arrival earlier in the season, and for that he and the team should take some credit
